And to start off 2009 on a positive note, here's a great recipe. I had this on Christmas Day and they were fantastic!
Dates and Fig Bars
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
2 cups packed dark brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup skinned, toasted hazelnuts, chopped
1 cup pitted dates
3/4 cup chopped dried figs (See note)
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoon grated lemon zest
2 tablespoons cognac or brandy
Place the figs and dates in a saucepan and cover with water 1 inch above
the fruit. Bring to a boil and reduce the heat. Simmer until tender,
about 20 minutes. Drain. Place the fruit on paper toweling for 10
minutes to blot up any excess water.
Process the fruit, sugar, lemon zest, and cognac with the steel blade in
a food processor until a smooth paste forms.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Cream the butter and brown sugar together in a large mixing bowl. Add
the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the
vanilla and combine well.
Stir in the oats, flour baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. Add the
chopped hazelnuts.
Pat two-thirds of the oatmeal mixture in the bottom of a 9-inch square
baking pan. Spread the date-fig puree over the oatmeal. Crumble the
remaining oatmeal with your fingers and sprinkle it loosely on top of
the fruit puree.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool completely. Cut into 16 squares.
Note: Although the recipe calls for dried figs, make sure they are soft
and moist.

| Writing and Music - a Comparison |
What is Music Anyway? What is Writing Anyway?
In The Intellectual Devotional by David S Kidder & Noah D Oppenheim we are given a lot of food for thought. One thing they say is that Music has a pattern where noise only has sound. I’m afraid that could define Heavy Metal for me. Noise, loud and busy that has no rhyme or reason for being. Sorry Heavy Metal fans, it just doesn’t translate for me.
Kidder and Oppenheim say the basics of music compared to noise have to do with
Pitch —How high or low a sound is to the ear;
Scale—a stepwise arrangement of pitches;
Key—which is an arrangement or system of pitches usually based on one of the major or minor scales.
Simple isn’t it? The Ghost Music of Vaudeville as a mystery has a similar basic set up. Pitch: how intense (high) or relaxed (low) the action
Scale: an arrangement of pitches that take us from each paragraph with a beginning, middle and end, to each chapter with its beginning, middle and end; to the book as a whole with a beginning, middle and end.
Key: That is a little harder, but I think of it as all the system of pitches – the paragraph, page, chapter, and book according to one of the Major (genre) or Minor (sub-genre) scales –genre and sub-genres of the mystery from cozy, procedural, true crime, or hard boiled. The same can be said for Romantic Suspense as in Inferno - soon to be released from Forbidden.
Therefore, everything in writing the mystery/suspense can be reduced or elevated to its musical counter part. Our culture influences our pitch, scale, and keys whether that is in writing or in music. Extremes may abound even while the rules are followed. For instance music in India compared to the music here in the west such as opera, rock or Country. Or, compare the Native American Drum, to the drum of modern rock – they are nowhere in the same playing field – the Native American Drum is spiritual, the rock drum is entertainment. Both, however, are entertainment and in some circles could be called spiritual.
Music and writing are both creative processes. Whether we use pitch, scale, and key or whether we use some other method to join the parts into a complete whole – they compliment each other, and I believe they embody each other.
It is said that we each “march to our different drummer,” and I believe that is as true in creating fiction as it is in creating music.

 EXCERPT
I lowered my gaze to the red carpet. It blurred as thoughts of having watched a blockbuster movie in this very place returned to my mind. How could life change in a single instant without so much as an explanation?
“Are you all right?”
I looked up, startled. Larry stood over me. He’d stayed behind while the others prepared to leave.
“As all right as I can be in such a crazy situation,” I answered truthfully.
He knelt down in front of me, eyes fixed on mine. “I know you’re scared. We all are. Well, maybe not Sharon.” He stopped long enough to chuckle. “But I can tell you that I’m terrified at what we may find outside this movie theatre, or out there in the city streets. But, Jess, all we can do is try, see what happens when we get out. We can’t stay here anymore.”
“I know, but it’s terrifying to realize what we’re about to do could cost us our lives.”
He nodded. “That’s true, but staying here would do the same, although I believe we all survived for a reason.”
I was convinced my survival was a pure coincidence, yet looking into his deep blue eyes, the passion this man held for fate attached itself to me. “Maybe you were right before.”
“About what?”
“About us meeting on this day no matter what,” I answered. My heart beat faster but it had nothing to do with the dangers that lay ahead. The undeniable attraction between this man and me was really taking a grip.
Larry grabbed a strand of dark hair that had escaped from my ponytail. His fingertips rubbed the end for a few seconds, before he pushed it back behind my ear.
“Let’s face this together, you and me.” He winked.
“You and me,” I echoed.
Larry stood up, held out both of his hands in front of him. I put mine in his and allowed him to help me up. It was amazing, but as I stood there with my hands still in his, the others seemed to blend into the darkness.
Suddenly there was only us, two strangers who’d met and instantly clicked. In spite of the odds stacked against us, I wished he’d pull me in for an embrace or a kiss. The thought made my stomach fill with butterflies. But Larry didn’t do anything. He just stood there and held my hands in his, with his gaze pinned on mine.
When I looked away from his penetrating gaze, all eyes were on us.
